Owara Kaze no Bon
Owara Kaze no Bon is a traditional festival held every year from September 1st to 3rd in Yatsuo, a charming town in Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. With a history spanning around 300 years, this festival is known for its hauntingly beautiful atmosphere. Dancers, wearing wide-brimmed straw hats that obscure their faces, move gracefully to the melancholic melody of the Owara Bushi folk song.
As the town glows under the soft light of paper lanterns, the stone-paved streets and old-fashioned townhouses create an enchanting scene straight out of a dream. Unlike other lively festivals, Owara Kaze no Bon is cherished for its quiet, emotional ambiance. Tateyama Mountain Range
The Northern Alps in the southeastern part of Toyama Prefecture are home to a series of majestic peaks reaching around 3,000 meters in elevation. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a world-famous mountain sightseeing route where visitors can experience breathtaking seasonal landscapes, from the towering snow walls of “Yuki no Otani” in spring to vibrant alpine flowers in summer and stunning autumn foliage in the fall.
Kurobe Dam
Kurobe Dam is one of Japan’s largest arch concrete dams, and its spectacular sightseeing water discharge from late June to mid-October is a must-see. Ainokura Gassho-Zukuri Village
The “Aikura Gassho-zukuri Village” in Nanto City is a historic farming village that has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It features 20 traditional gassho-zukuri houses that were built between 100 and 350 years ago, and the village is still home to local residents, making it a “living World Heritage site.” When visiting, it’s important to follow proper etiquette and respect the local customs.
Amahara Coast
“Amihara Coast” is a scenic spot located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and is known for its stunning views of the Tateyama Mountain Range across Toyama Bay. The contrast between the Meiwa rock standing in the sea and the Tateyama mountains is breathtaking, and in the early mornings during winter, you can witness the magical sight of “Kearashi” – a fog rising from the surface of the sea, creating an almost mystical landscape.
Toyama Bay

Gokayama
“Gokayama” is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its traditional gassho-zukuri villages. Small villages are scattered around, with the “Aikura” and “Suganuma” villages being the most famous. It’s also known as the birthplace of folk songs like “Kokiriko” and “Mugiya-bushi,” and you can experience traditional music and dance here. You can visit the area by taking the “World Heritage Bus” and explore its beauty.
Unazuki Onsen
Unazuki Onsen in Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture, is a famous hot spring located at the gateway to the Kurobe Gorge. Known as a “beauty hot spring,” it’s cherished for its skin-nourishing properties. Visitors can enjoy the hot springs while taking in the stunning views of the beautiful gorge. Additionally, the trolley train that runs through the breathtaking natural scenery of Kurobe Gorge is a popular attraction.
Takaoka Great Buddha
The “Takaoka Great Buddha” in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, is one of Japan’s three largest Buddha statues, standing at an impressive height of 16 meters. Its beautifully detailed and meticulously crafted appearance is often referred to as “the handsomest Buddha in Japan.” As you walk along the path leading from the entrance of the temple grounds to the base of the statue, you’ll notice the Buddha’s eyes gradually opening as you get closer.
Matsukawa Park
Matsukawa Park is famous for its cherry blossoms, with around 500 cherry trees lining the river for about 4 kilometers. In spring, a tunnel of blossoms forms, and a popular way to enjoy the view is by taking a cherry blossom cruise on the Matsukawa sightseeing boat, which sails through the stunningly bloomed flowers.
Kiji Red Snow Crab
The Ikuchi area in Toyama Prefecture is famous for its production of red snow crab. Known for its sweet, delicate, and refreshing flesh, the red snow crab is a local delicacy. You can enjoy fresh crab dishes at the local ports and restaurants.
