The Akita Kanto Festival is one of Japan’s most spectacular summer festivals, held annually in Akita City from August 3rd to 6th. With a history spanning over 270 years, this traditional event is dedicated to praying for a bountiful harvest and good health.
The highlight of the festival is the massive bamboo poles (called kanto) adorned with dozens of glowing lanterns, which symbolize golden rice stalks swaying in the wind. These poles can reach up to 12 meters (40 feet) in height and weigh over 50 kilograms (110 pounds)! Skilled performers balance them on their hands, shoulders, and even foreheads, demonstrating incredible strength and precision.
As the performers move to the rhythm of “Dokkoisho! Dokkoisho!” chants, the atmosphere becomes electric. The warm glow of the lanterns against the night sky, combined with the breathtaking performances, creates a mesmerizing and unforgettable experience.
