Iwami Kagura
“Iwami Kagura” is a traditional form of Kagura dance from the Iwami region in Shimane Prefecture. It was originally performed during Shinto festivals, but over time, it evolved to become more of an entertainment spectacle. The performances are based on myths and historical stories, often focusing on themes like demon-slaying or battles between gods. On stage, dancers wear elaborate costumes and perform intense dances and acts, all synchronized with the rhythms of drums and flutes. Iwami Kagura is a comprehensive art form that blends dance and music, and its powerful performances leave a strong impression on audiences. It has been cherished by local communities for centuries and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.

Izumo Taisha
Izumo Taisha is one of Japan’s most iconic shrines, located in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. It enshrines the deity Ōkuninushi, the god of matchmaking. The shrine has a long history, attracting the devotion of people for thousands of years. Inside the grounds, you’ll find the majestic main hall and the Kagura Hall, famous for its massive sacred rope. When visiting, the proper way to pray is to bow twice, clap four times, and bow once more. While you’re there, you can also enjoy shopping and food along Kamimon Street.

Matsue Castle
Matsue Castle is located in Matsue City and is one of the 12 remaining original castles in Japan. It’s designated as a National Treasure and is also known as “Chidori Castle”. From the top of the castle keep, you can enjoy a stunning view of the city of Matsue and Lake Shinji. You can also take a boat tour around the moat that surrounds the castle. Nearby, you’ll find samurai residences, giving you a glimpse into the life of the samurai back in the day.

Adachi Museum of Art
The Adachi Museum of Art, located in Yasugi City, is famous for its collection of modern Japanese paintings and its stunning Japanese garden. The garden has been ranked as the best in Japan for 22 consecutive years by the American magazine Journal of Japanese Gardening and has also earned three stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. Along with the garden’s beauty, visitors can enjoy masterpieces by renowned artists like Yokoyama Taikan and Takeuchi Seihō.

Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine
Iwami Ginzan, located in the city of Ōda, is a silver mine that was opened in the 16th century. At its peak, it is said to have produced about a third of the world’s silver. In 2007, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and today, visitors can walk through the mining tunnels developed during the Edo period, such as the Ryūgenji Mine. Tsuwano
Tsuwano Town, located in the western part of Shimane Prefecture, is often referred to as the ‘Little Kyoto of the San’in region.’ The town still retains much of its Edo-era charm, especially along the main street, Honmachi. You’ll find several cultural and historical landmarks throughout the area, including the Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s top five Inari shrines, and the former residence of Mori Ogai.

Hinomisaki Lighthouse
The Hinomisaki Lighthouse, located in Izumo City, is Japan’s tallest stone lighthouse, known for its beautiful white appearance. From its observation deck, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Sea of Japan. It holds significant historical value, having been selected as one of the ‘100 Historic Lighthouses of the World’ in 1998, and designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government in 2022.

Yunotsu Onsen
Yunotsu Onsen, located in the city of Oda, is a hot spring area with a history spanning over 1,300 years. It flourished as a base for the UNESCO World Heritage site, Iwami Ginzan, and the hot spring town still retains the charm of the Edo period. Among the many attractions, Yakushiyu is especially popular as the highest-rated natural hot spring in Japan.

Gotsu City
Ezumi City is a region famous for its traditional performing arts, particularly the ‘Iwami Kagura,’ where you can enjoy ‘magnificent and powerful dances’ during regular performances. Additionally, the city is home to the largest river in the Chugoku region, the Gono River, offering activities like canoeing, making it a town full of natural beauty and rich history.
