Shimonoseki Kaikyō Festival
The “Shimonoseki Straits Festival” is a traditional event held annually from May 2nd to 4th in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The festival celebrates history and the sea, with events themed around significant moments such as the Battle of Dan-no-ura (1185) between the Taira and Minamoto clans, and the famous duel between Musashi and Kojiro on Ganryu Island. One of the highlights of the festival is the “Genpei Ship Battle,” where participants dress in extravagant costumes and march as the Taira and Minamoto clans, and the “Ganryu Island Festival,” which recreates the legendary duel between Musashi and Kojiro. During the festival, you can also enjoy parades, maritime performances, and traditional local arts, making it one of the largest and most exciting festivals in Shimonoseki, filled with history and romance.

Kintai Bridge
Kintai Bridge is a stunning wooden five-arched bridge spanning 193.3 meters in length and 5 meters in width over the Nishiki River in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It’s recognized as one of Japan’s three famous bridges. Originally built in 1673 by the feudal lord of Iwakuni, Hiroyoshi Kikkawa, the bridge’s unique design continues to be highly regarded even by modern engineering standards. Known for its breathtaking seasonal views, Kintai Bridge offers something beautiful to see throughout the year—cherry blossoms in spring, cormorant fishing and fireworks in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes in winter.

Tsunoshima Bridge
The Tsunoshima Bridge is a 1,780-meter long bridge that connects Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture with Tsunoshima Island. It offers breathtaking views with its cobalt blue sea backdrop. Famous for being a filming location for movies and commercials, the bridge is free to cross. It’s not only accessible by car but also on foot or by bicycle, making it a popular spot for drives and cycling. On both ends of the bridge, there are observation points. The views from “Amanose Park” on the Honshu side and “Sezaki Sun Park” on the Tsunoshima side are particularly famous for their stunning scenery.

Rurikoji Five-Storied Pagoda
The Rurikouji Five-Story Pagoda, located in Yamaguchi City, stands at 31.2 meters tall and was built in 1442. It is an outstanding example of mid-Muromachi period architecture and is known as one of Japan’s “Three Great Pagodas.” Its stunning appearance is considered the pinnacle of the Ōuchi culture and continues to captivate visitors.

Akiyoshido Cave
Akiyoshido Cave, located in Mine City, is one of Japan’s largest limestone caves, with about 1 km of its total 11.2 km length open to the public. The temperature inside the cave remains a constant 17°C year-round, making it a comfortable place to visit any time of the year. The cave features stunning natural formations, including the ‘Hyakumai-zara’ (Hundred Plates), where limestone has spread out like a plate, and the ‘Golden Pillar,’ which rises to a height of 15 meters. These unique sights were created over thousands of years. For a more adventurous experience, you can also enjoy special programs like the ‘Romantic Darkness Adventure,’ where you explore the cave with just a flashlight.

Karato Market, Shimonoseki City
Karakoto Market, located in Shimonoseki City, is a vibrant market where you can find fresh seafood. Especially on weekends and holidays, the “Ikiki Bakan Street” event is held, where you can enjoy local specialties like fugu (pufferfish) dishes and various seafood delicacies. With a stunning view of the Kanmon Straits, you can enjoy both delicious food and beautiful scenery.

Hagi Castle Ruins, Hagi City
Hagi Castle Ruins (Shimonoseki Park) is located in Hagi City and is the site of a castle originally built by Mori Terumoto in 1604. Today, the stone walls and moats still remain, and together with the surrounding castle town, it is part of the World Heritage Sites (including five assets related to Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution). In spring, it is also well-known as a cherry blossom spot, with around 600 cherry trees of the Somei Yoshino variety in full bloom.

Motonosumi Shrine
Motonosumi Shrine is located in Nagato City and is known for its breathtaking view, with 123 bright red torii gates stretching along the cliffs of the Sea of Japan. The shrine was built based on a message from a white fox that appeared to a fisherman in his dreams. One of the most unique aspects of visiting the shrine is its unusual method of offering, where visitors toss coins into the donation box. In 2015, it was named one of CNN’s ’31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan.’

Shirakabe Townscape, Yanai City
The historic district of Yanai, with its white-walled buildings, stretches for about 200 meters and is lined with merchant houses from the Edo period. It preserves the legacy of Yanai’s past as a thriving commercial hub under the Iwakuni Domain. During the summer, the city is beautifully adorned by goldfish lanterns swaying gently from shop eaves.

Gontanshin Festival Fireworks, Hofu City
The “Gotanshin Festival” at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine celebrates the birthday of Sugawara no Michizane, and it takes place every year from August 3rd to 5th. On the final day, a fireworks display lights up the sky with about 4,000 fireworks. During the “Mantou no Yube” (Evening of Lanterns), over 2,000 lanterns are lit, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere.

Nagato Yumoto Onsen
Nagato Yumoto Onsen is the oldest hot spring area in Yamaguchi Prefecture, boasting a history of around 600 years. Along the Otonashi River, you’ll find foot baths and cafes, making it a great spot for a relaxing stroll. The alkaline simple hot spring water is well-known for its skin-beautifying effects, and taking a tour of the different baths is a popular activity here.
