Lake Biwa Fireworks Festival
The Biwako Fireworks Festival is one of the top summer events in the Kansai region, held every year in early August over Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. Around 10,000 fireworks are launched from the water, lighting up both the night sky and the lake’s surface in a dazzling display.
Among the highlights are the “underwater starmine”, which fans out beautifully across the water, and the diagonal starmine, shot at an angle for a dramatic effect you can only experience over a lake. The show draws about 300,000 spectators annually, and you can enjoy it from the lakeside or even from sightseeing boats out on the water.
Since it gets quite crowded, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to get there and find a good spot.
