Yosakoi Festival
The “Yosakoi Festival” is a lively and energetic dance festival held every year in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, from August 9th to 12th. It started in 1954 as part of post-war reconstruction efforts, and today, it’s recognized as the birthplace of the “Yosakoi Dance,” which has spread across Japan. The festival’s most unique feature is the use of “naruko” (clappers) in each dancer’s hands, as they perform to free-spirited choreography. Over 100 teams participate, and the music and costumes are full of personality, with exciting performances happening throughout the city. This dynamic event has become a symbol of Kochi’s summer, drawing a large number of visitors from all over Japan.

Katsurahama
“Kenritsu Beach” is a beautiful crescent-shaped sandy beach located on the Urado Peninsula in Kochi City. It’s a stunning spot where pine forests meet the deep blue sea. Known as a “moon viewing spot,” it is even featured in the famous “Yosakoi Bushi” folk song. Inside the area, you’ll find the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, the Keihama Aquarium, and the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum, offering a perfect mix of history and nature. There’s also a great lookout point at Ryūō Cape’s Kaizumi Shrine, where you can enjoy breathtaking views. While swimming is prohibited due to rough waves, it’s an ideal destination for a stroll or sightseeing.

Shimanto River
The “Shimanto River” is a major river that flows through the western part of Kochi Prefecture, stretching 196 kilometers in length. Its pristine waters are often referred to as the “last clear stream in Japan.” Along the river, you’ll find several “sunken bridges” without railings, and one of the most famous is the Sada Sunken Bridge, which spans 291.6 meters. The river is a popular spot for canoeing and rafting, allowing you to fully experience the unique natural beauty of the Shimanto River.

Hirome Market
“Hirome Ichiba” is an indoor market located in the heart of Kochi City, lined with around 60 restaurants and shops. It opened in 1998 and has become a lively spot for both locals and tourists. With about 500 seats, guests often share tables, creating a vibrant, food-market atmosphere. The market is also a great place to enjoy local dishes, such as the famous Katsuo no Tataki (seared bonito) and dishes made with unagi (moray eel), offering an authentic taste of Kochi.

Ryugado Cave
“Ryugado Cave” is one of Japan’s three major limestone caves, located in Kami City. About 1 kilometer of its total 4-kilometer length is open to the public as a tourist course. Inside the cave, there’s a rare artifact called the “God’s Pot,” which is a Yayoi-period pottery fused with the stalactites, making it historically significant. The cave also offers a magical light display and an adventurous course (advance reservations required), making it a perfect spot to experience the mysteries of nature.

Cape Ashizuri
Cape Ashizuri, located in Tosashimizu City on Shikoku Island, is renowned for its dramatic cliffs jutting out into the Pacific Ocean. From the Ashizuri Observatory, visitors are treated to a 270-degree panoramic view, where the horizon forms a captivating arch—a sight that often leads people to remark, “You can truly feel the Earth’s curvature.” At the tip of the cape stands the pristine white Ashizuri Lighthouse, and nearby is Kongofuku-ji Temple, both must-see spots for travelers.

Niyodo River / Niyodo Blue
“The Niyodogawa River is a crystal-clear stream that flows through Kochi Prefecture, stretching 124 kilometers in length. The water, which contains very few impurities, appears blue due to the wavelength of light, and its beauty has earned it the name ‘Niyodo Blue.’ Notably, spots like ‘Niko Falls,’ ‘Ago Gorge,’ and ‘Nakatsu Gorge’ are famous for their breathtaking views.”

Harimaya Bridge
“Harimaya Bridge” is a historic bridge located in the heart of Kochi City. It was built during the Edo period by two merchants, Hitsuya Michisuke and Harimaya Sōtoku, to facilitate travel. The bridge is featured in the famous folk song “Yosakoi Bushi” and is also known as the setting for the tragic love story of Junshin and Ouma. Today, it has been developed into a park and is a popular tourist spot.

Cape Muroto
“Muroto Cape” is a magnificent cape located in the eastern part of Kochi Prefecture, known for its dramatic landscape filled with numerous bizarre rock formations. It’s a great place to enjoy the beauty of nature’s creations. In 2011, it was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The cape is also famous for being a training site for the Buddhist monk Kukai, with notable spots like the Mikurodo Cave and the Hotsumisaki Temple.

Yosakoi Festival
The Yosakoi Festival is a large-scale summer event held annually in Kochi City every August, with around 20,000 dancers taking part. Dancers perform in a variety of styles while holding naruko (wooden clappers), and the entire city is filled with an exciting, energetic atmosphere. The festival also hosts a national competition, where both participants and spectators can join in the fun together.

Kochi Castle
“Kochi Castle” is a historic Edo-period castle located in Kochi City. It is the only castle in Japan where both the main tower (tenshu) and the main palace (honmaru-goten) still stand today. It’s rare for both of these structures to be so well-preserved, making it of high historical value. From the main tower, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the city, and it’s also a popular spot for cherry blossoms in spring and colorful autumn leaves.
