Gion Festival
The Gion Festival, held annually at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most famous festivals. It runs for a month starting on July 1st, and has a history of over 1,100 years. Originally, it was a ritual to pray for the end of a plague.
The highlight of the festival is the Yamaboko Junko (Float Procession), which takes place on July 17th and 24th. During this event, 34 gorgeous floats, known as yamaboko, parade through the streets of Kyoto. These floats are often referred to as “moving museums” due to their intricate decorations and large size.
In the evenings during the Yoiyama (the nights leading up to the procession), lanterns light up, creating a magical, otherworldly atmosphere. This festival, which is also a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, truly embodies Japan’s traditional culture.
