Beppu Hatto Hot Springs Festival
The Beppu Hatto Onsen Festival is one of Beppu’s biggest spring events, held every year from April 1st through the first weekend of the month. As Japan’s leading hot spring city, Beppu hosts this festival to express gratitude for its abundant natural hot spring resources.
During the festival, many of Beppu’s hot springs are open to the public for free, allowing both locals and tourists to enjoy relaxing soaks all over the city. One of the main highlights is the Yubukkake Festival, where participants splash hot spring water in a lively and spirited ritual to honor its sacredness. Another crowd favorite is the Yukemuri Parade, where hot water is joyfully sprinkled through the streets, making it a fun and interactive experience for everyone.

Beppu Onsen
Beppu Onsen is one of Japan’s top hot spring destinations, located in Beppu City. It boasts the largest number of hot spring sources and the highest flow rate in the country. Within the city, you’ll find eight distinct hot spring areas, known as the “Beppu Hachiyu” (Hamakake, Beppu, Kannawa, Hottada, Myoban, Takegawara, Shibaishi, and Kamegawa), each offering unique water qualities and atmospheres. Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi (Kokonoe “Dream” Suspension Bridge)
The Kokonoe ‘Dream’ Suspension Bridge is a pedestrian-only bridge located in Kokonoe Town, boasting a length of 390 meters and a height of 173 meters. From the bridge, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of stunning sights, such as the ‘Shindon Falls,’ the ‘Naruko River Gorge’s primeval forest,’ and the ‘Kuju Mountains.’ It’s a perfect spot to take in the majestic nature through the four seasons.

Nakatsu Karaage (Nakatsu-style Fried Chicken)
“Nakatsu Karaage” is a local specialty of Nakatsu City. The chicken is marinated in a special soy sauce or salt-based sauce, then coated in potato starch and deep-fried to a crispy perfection.
