Takachiho Kagura Festival
The “Takahito Kagura Festival” is a traditional kagura performance that has been passed down in Takachiho Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. Held every year on November 22nd and 23rd at Takachiho Shrine’s Kagura Hall, the “Night Kagura” is performed as an offering, praying for a good harvest. The kagura consists of 33 acts, with notable performances such as “Tejikarao no Mai” and “Uchidume no Mai,” which are based on the Amano-Iwato myth. Outside of the Night Kagura season, tourists can also enjoy a one-hour performance starting at 8 PM every night at Takachiho Shrine, where four of the most representative acts are performed, making it an easy and enjoyable experience for anyone.

Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho Gorge is a beautiful 7-kilometer-long canyon located in Takachiho Town. It is a national scenic spot and natural monument, featuring dramatic cliffs that rise 80 to 100 meters. The gorge was formed by volcanic activity from Mount Aso, where pyroclastic flows eroded the Gokase River, creating these striking columnar rock formations. One of the gorge’s highlights is the magnificent “Manai Falls,” which is selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. You can get up close to the falls by renting a boat. There is also a well-maintained walking trail where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the area throughout the four seasons.

Aoshima & Oni no Sentakuita (Devil’s Washboard)
Aoshima is a small island with a circumference of about 1.5 kilometers, known for its unique geological feature, the ‘Devil’s Washboard.’ This unusual rock formation was created about 7 million years ago when layers of sandstone and mudstone in the sea were uplifted and shaped by years of wave erosion into a washboard-like pattern. On the island, you’ll find Aoshima Shrine, which is a popular tourist spot.

Udo Shrine
Udo Shrine is a unique shrine located in a cave on a cliff facing the Hyuganada Sea in Nichinan City. It’s a rare “downhill shrine” where visitors walk downhill to reach the main hall. In front of the main hall, there’s a fun tradition where people throw “un-dama” (lucky stones) into a hollow in a turtle-shaped rock, hoping for good luck. Additionally, the ‘Chichi Iwa’ (Breast Rock) inside the cave is believed to bring blessings for safe childbirth and childcare.

Nichinan Coast
The Nichinan Coast stretches for about 100 kilometers from the southern part of Miyazaki City to Cape Toi, offering a scenic landscape full of tropical charm. It is home to popular tourist spots like Aoshima, Horikiri Pass, and Udo Shrine, making it a favorite driving route. The area is also known as a mecca for surfing.

Obi Castle Town
Obijōkamachi (Obi Castle Town) is a historic area located in Nichinan City. It thrived as a castle town for around 280 years, starting from 1588. The charming townscape, featuring preserved samurai residences and stone walls, is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings. Kirishima Mountain Range (Miyazaki)
The Kirishima mountain range is a volcanic group spanning Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures, with over 20 mountains, including its highest peak, Karakuni-dake. It’s famous for its beautiful seasonal landscapes, hiking trails, and hot springs. Takachiho-no-mine is a sacred spot in Japanese mythology, believed to be the site where the gods descended to earth. When hiking volcanoes, be sure to follow any regulations and safety guidelines for your own safety.

Hyuga Cape & Umagase
Hyuga Cape, located in Hyuga City, is a 5 km long ria coastline. One of its famous spots, Uma-ga-se, is known for its scenic columnar jointing formations. Designated as a National Natural Monument, the viewpoint offers a panoramic, unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean, allowing you to experience the curvature of the Earth – truly a breathtaking spot.

Takaharu Town
Takaharucho is a nature-rich town located at the foot of the Kirishima mountain range, known as the birthplace of Japan’s first emperor, Emperor Jimmu, according to Japanese mythology. You can immerse yourself in the world of mythology at places like the Sano Shrine and Kirishima Higashi Shrine. Additionally, you can enjoy activities like camping at the crater lake, Oike, in the Kirishima volcanic group.

Ebino Plateau
Ebino Kogen is a beautiful highland located at an elevation of about 1,200 meters in the Kirishima mountain range, known for its rich natural surroundings and popular trekking spots. You can enjoy stunning views of volcanic lakes like Fudo Pond and Rokukannon Pond. However, be aware that access might be restricted due to the potential release of volcanic gas, so it’s important to check for any regulations before visiting.

Nichinan Phoenix Road
The Nichinan Phoenix Road is a scenic drive along the southern coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, offering breathtaking views of the beautiful landscape of Nichinan Coast National Park. Along this route, you’ll find popular tourist spots like Aoshima, Horikiri Pass, and Udo Shrine, all nestled by the coast. The road is lined with palm trees, creating a perfect tropical atmosphere.
