Hakata Dontaku Port Festival
The Hakata Dontaku Port Festival is one of Japan’s largest civic festivals, held annually on May 3rd and 4th in Fukuoka City, attracting around 2 million visitors. Its origins trace back to the 12th century’s “Hakata Matsubayashi,” and it’s renowned for its citizen-participation parades.
During the main events, groups dressed in traditional attire, known as “Dontaku,” parade through the city, enlivening the streets with performances of taiko drumming, shamisen music, and vibrant dances. Both locals and tourists are welcome to join in the festivities, and the celebration culminates in a spectacular fireworks display at night.
This festival beautifully blends historical traditions with modern culture, embodying the vibrant spirit of Fukuoka.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, located in Dazaifu City, is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. As the head shrine of approximately 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide, it’s widely revered as the god of academics and cultural arts. The shrine grounds are home to around 6,000 plum trees of about 200 varieties, which bloom beautifully in spring. Additionally, the approach to the shrine is lined with numerous eateries and souvenir shops, making it a delightful spot for visitors to explore after their visit.

Fukuoka Tower
“Fukuoka Tower” is Japan’s tallest seaside tower, standing at 234 meters. It was built as a monument for the 1989 Asia-Pacific Exposition (Yokatopia) held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fukuoka City’s establishment. From the observation room on the top floor, located 123 meters above the ground, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of the Fukuoka cityscape and Hakata Bay. At night, the tower is beautifully illuminated with seasonal lights, creating a vibrant display that changes throughout the year.

Yanagawa River Cruising
Taking a boat ride along the canals of Yanagawa is a popular sightseeing activity where you get to explore the city’s waterways (moats) on a traditional ‘donko boat.’ You can enjoy the scenic views of weeping willows and the white-walled streets from the water, while the boatman skillfully maneuvers the boat with his pole and entertains you with light-hearted stories. The whole ride takes about 60 minutes, and there are several boarding locations within a 5-10 minute walk from Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station.

Itoshima Peninsula
Itoshima Peninsula, located in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture, is an area known for its beautiful coastline and rich natural scenery. One of its highlights is the “Meoto Iwa” (Wedded Rocks), which offers a perfect sunset view, especially around the summer solstice. The sunset between the rocks during this time is truly stunning. Another must-see is “Akoya no Daimon,” a massive sea cave formed by coastal erosion, where you can explore the inside by taking a sightseeing boat. The area is also home to scenic cafes, craft shops, and offers delicious seafood dishes as well as a variety of water sports activities.

Ohori Park
“Ōhori Park” is a large scenic park in Fukuoka City, with a pond at its center that was once part of the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle. The 2-kilometer walking path around the park is perfect for a leisurely stroll or jog. The park also features a Japanese garden, a Noh theater, and a museum, making it a great spot to enjoy both nature and culture.

Kitakyushu & Mojiko Retro
“Moji Port Retro” is located in the Moji district of Kitakyushu City and is known for its many retro buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods. Highlights include the JR Moji Port Station, the former Moji Mitsui Club, and the old Moji Customs House. You can also enjoy a panoramic view of the nostalgic, retro-style townscape from the Moji Port Retro Observatory.

Munakata Taisha Shrine
Munakata Taisha, located in Munakata City, is one of Japan’s oldest shrines, and it refers to the three sanctuaries that enshrine the three daughters of the sun goddess Amaterasu. In 2017, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the “Sacred Island of Okinoshima” heritage. Every year, the grand “Miare Festival” is held during the autumn festival, where the three goddesses are symbolically reunited in a traditional ceremony.

Kawachi Wisteria Garden
Kawachi Fujien is a wisteria garden located in Yahatanishi, Kitakyushu. From late April to mid-May, the large wisteria trellis, covering 80 tatami mats, blooms beautifully, creating an absolutely stunning scene. In 2012, it was selected as one of the ’10 Most Beautiful Places in the World,’ and in 2015, it was featured in CNN’s ’31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan.’

Mojiko
Moji Port is located in Kitakyushu City and is known for its “Moji Port Retro” area, which features buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods. Additionally, the Kanmon Straits connect Moji, Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture, with Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture on Honshu. You can also walk through the Kanmon Tunnel, a pedestrian tunnel beneath the sea.

Yame City & Yame Tea
Yame City is located in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture and is famous nationwide as a producer of Yame tea. The area’s climate, with its significant temperature differences, helps cultivate fragrant tea leaves. The city is home to expansive tea fields, and visitors can enjoy factory tours and tea-picking experiences. You can also explore the townscape of Yame Fukuoka and immerse yourself in the local tea culture.
