Tottori Prefecture is the least populated area in Japan, offering a captivating blend of untouched nature and unique tourist spots.

Tottori Shan-Shan Festival

The “Tottori Shan-shan Festival” is a vibrant summer celebration held every mid-August in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. The festival began in 1965 and has since grown around Tottori’s traditional dance, the “Inaba Umbrella Dance” (Inaba no Kasa Odori). The highlight of the festival is the lively “Umbrella Dance Parade,” where dancers holding colorful “shanshan umbrellas” move in sync to rhythmic music. It’s a breathtaking sight as thousands of dancers perform in unison, creating a spectacular display. The festival ends with a stunning fireworks show, adding to the summer atmosphere in Tottori. It’s a lively and colorful event where you can experience the region’s traditional culture.

Tottori Sand Dunes

Tottori Sand Dunes, located in Tottori City, is one of Japan’s largest sand dunes, stretching 16 kilometers from east to west and 2.4 kilometers from north to south. It has been designated as a national natural monument and is a protected area. The dunes are known for their stunning sand patterns and unique, varied landscapes. Visitors can enjoy experiences like camel riding and sand dune lifts. However, please note that activities such as taking sand home, writing on the dunes, fireworks, and swimming in the sea are prohibited, so make sure to follow the rules!

Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouses

The Kurayoshi White Wall Warehouse District, located in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, is a historic area lined with white-walled warehouses and red-tiled merchant houses built during the Edo to Meiji periods along the Tamagawa River. Its charming, nostalgic atmosphere is one of its main attractions. Today, these buildings are used for various purposes, including shops selling local goods, cafes, and galleries, welcoming visitors with their retro vibe.

Misasa Onsen

Misasa Onsen, located in Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture, is one of the world’s top radon hot springs, with a history spanning about 850 years. The ryokan (inn) district stretches along the Mitoku River, and one of the highlights is the “Kawara Outdoor Bath” — an open-air mixed bath located right by the river, as the name suggests. The hot spring town exudes a nostalgic Showa-era vibe, making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll while enjoying the charming scenery.

Hakuto Shrine

Hakuto Shrine, located in Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, is dedicated to the god of the white rabbit featured in the Japanese myth of “Inaba no Shirousagi.” The shrine grounds are adorned with stone statues and ema (votive plaques) of the white rabbit, and it is believed to bring blessings for good relationships. Additionally, there is a “Mimiarai-ike” (Ear-Washing Pond), where the wounded white rabbit, bitten by a crocodile in the myth, is said to have healed its injuries using cattail reeds.

Kaike Onsen

Kaike Onsen is one of the largest hot spring areas in the San’in region, located in Yonago City. Its stunning location offers views of the Sea of Japan and Mount Daisen, making it a truly picturesque spot. It’s also known as the birthplace of the Japanese triathlon, with an annual competition held here.

Daisen

Mount Daisen is the highest peak in the Chugoku region and is often called “Hoki Fuji” due to its resemblance to Mount Fuji. It offers activities for all seasons, from hiking to skiing. The mountain is also home to historic sites like Daisenji Temple and Daiginzan Shrine, making it a long-time destination for mountain worship.

Uradome Coast

“Urato Coast” is a stunning coastal area along the Sea of Japan, featuring a rugged, ria coastline with breathtaking cliffs, sea caves, and unique rock formations created by the crashing waves of the Sea of Japan. The crystal-clear waters offer great opportunities for sightseeing cruises and sea kayaking.

Yurihama Town & Lake Tōgō

“Lake Togo” is a brackish lake located in the central part of Tottori Prefecture, with a circumference of about 12 kilometers. From Mount Hatchobuse, the lake’s shape resembles a crane spreading its wings and flying, which is why it’s also called “Crane Lake.” On the lakeside, you’ll find “Togo Onsen,” where you can enjoy relaxing hot springs while taking in the beautiful view of the lake.

Sakaiminato City

Saiki City is located in the western part of Tottori Prefecture and is the hometown of the famous manga artist Shigeru Mizuki. The path from Saiki Station to the Mizuki Shigeru Memorial Museum is called ‘Mizuki Shigeru Road,’ and along the way, you’ll find bronze statues of various yokai, making it a must-visit spot for fans.
