Yamaage festival
“Yamaage festival” is a traditional summer festival held in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture, for three days, including the fourth Saturday of July. With a history of over 450 years, it is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The festival’s main attraction is Japan’s largest outdoor kabuki performance. A massive backdrop called “Harika-yama”, made of bamboo and paper, is assembled on-site, creating a dynamic, ever-changing stage as performances unfold. Different kabuki plays take place at various locations throughout the city, and the audience moves along with the mobile stages, making it an immersive experience.
