Overview of Tashirojima
Tashirojima, a small island off the coast of Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, is affectionately known as “Cat Island” and has become a popular destination for cat lovers from Japan and around the world. Home to more cats than residents, the island has long revered felines as protectors of the local fishing industry. Visitors can explore the Cat Shrine (Neko Jinja), a symbol of the islanders’ deep respect and affection for cats.
One of the island’s unique attractions is Manga Island, a quirky lodging area featuring cat-shaped cabins designed by famous Japanese manga artists—an unforgettable stay for any traveler. With its relaxed atmosphere, lush natural scenery, and charming feline residents, Tashirojima offers a peaceful and memorable travel experience.
The island is easily accessible, with a ferry ride of about 40–50 minutes from Ishinomaki Port, making it an ideal day trip or overnight getaway for visitors seeking both relaxation and discovery.
Please Note:
Feeding, teasing, or using catnip with the island’s cats is prohibited to protect their health.
Dogs (except service dogs) are not allowed on the island to maintain its peaceful environment.
Please respect the local culture that honors and protects its feline inhabitants.
