Overview of Sakushima
Contents
Sakushima, a small island in Mikawa Bay, Aichi Prefecture, is a hidden gem where art and nature blend beautifully. The island is renowned for its outdoor art installations, with its most famous piece being the “Nap House”—a black cube-shaped rest area that even appeared in a Detective Conan movie. Another popular photo spot is the all-white, striking “East House”, a must-visit for Instagram enthusiasts.
But Sakushima offers much more than art. The island is known for its delicious local seafood, especially its premium “Shima Asari” clams. Don’t miss the island’s famous giant clam rice bowls. In spring, dishes like octopus shabu-shabu and pufferfish are also local delicacies worth trying.
As you explore, you’ll also encounter the island’s traditional black wooden houses in the western village—built to withstand sea winds—providing a stunning contrast to the modern artworks scattered across the island.
With its natural beauty, fresh seafood, and approachable art scene, Sakushima makes for a perfect day trip or overnight stay for travelers looking for a unique and relaxing Japanese island experience.
