Tenjin Festival

The Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan’s three major festivals, held annually at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine from late June to July 25th. With over 1,000 years of history, it began as a religious event to honor the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane. The highlight of the festival comes on July 25th with the “Funatogyo” (boat procession) and the “Hounou Hanabi” (offering fireworks). Around 100 boats parade along the Okawa River, and in the evening, approximately 5,000 fireworks light up the sky, bringing summer to life in Osaka. On land, over 3,000 people participate in the “Rikutogyo” (land procession), filling the streets with vibrant energy. It’s a grand and spectacular festival that represents the spirit of Osaka.
