Overview of Ogijima
Ogijima, a small island about 5 km in circumference off the coast of Takamatsu City in Kagawa Prefecture, is known for its peaceful Seto Inland Sea views and charming hillside village. Narrow lanes and stone steps weave between traditional homes, creating a warm and nostalgic atmosphere that welcomes visitors.
Ogijima is also a popular site for the Setouchi Triennale, one of Japan’s best-known contemporary art festivals. As soon as you step off the ferry, you’re greeted by Ogijima’s Soul (Ogijima Exchange Center) and can explore a variety of unique art installations scattered across the island. These works, integrated into the local landscape and daily life, make for an inspiring combination of art walk and island stroll.
The island also offers stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, with sights of nearby Megijima and the distant mountains of Honshu. Despite its small size, Ogijima is a place where art, nature, and local life blend perfectly, inviting visitors to slow down and enjoy an off-the-beaten-path experience. This is the perfect destination for travelers seeking a peaceful island getaway in Japan.
Travel Tips:
- Wear comfortable shoes—expect lots of hills and stone steps.
- Food and drink options on the island are limited—bring snacks or drinks as needed.
- Some art installations are permanent, but check in advance for open days and times.
