Cat Alley (Neko no Hosomichi), a charming 200-meter stone-paved path in the heart of Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, stretches from Ushitora Shrine to Tenneiji Temple. This scenic walking route winds through quiet lanes lined with traditional homes, art installations, and quaint shops—blending retro charm with creativity and local culture.

At the entrance stands Ushitora Shrine, founded nearly 1,000 years ago—one of Onomichi’s oldest shrines, known for its sacred camphor tree and tranquil grounds. The path continues uphill to Tenneiji Temple, offering panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea, along with historical highlights such as the Five Hundred Rakan statues and the three-story pagoda.

Along the alley, visitors will find art galleries, cafés, and handmade craft shops, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Keep an eye out for the whimsical “Fukuishi Neko” lucky stone cats scattered along the way—ideal for a photo or two.   • Café and gallery hours vary; check ahead for opening days (some are closed irregularly).

How to Access Cat Alley (as of June 2025)

STEP
From Hiroshima Station to JR Onomichi Station
  • Take the JR Sanyo Main Line (toward Fukuyama), about 1 hour 30 minutes
  • If transferring from Fukuyama Station, about 20 minutes
STEP
From JR Onomichi Station to “Cat Alley”
  • About 17-minute walk (head uphill toward Ushitora Shrine)
  • About 5 to 10 minutes by taxi from the station

*Ushitora Shrine is the entrance to Cat Alley.
