Chagu Chagu Umakko

Chagu Chagu Umakko is a traditional festival held every year on the second Saturday of June in Iwate Prefecture. This event is a way to show appreciation for farm horses and pray for a good harvest. The horses taking part in the festival are beautifully decorated with vibrant embroidery and ornaments as they parade about 14 km from Onikoshi Sozen Shrine in Takizawa City to Morioka Hachimangu Shrine in Morioka City.

Along the route, the streets are lined with cheering locals and tourists, creating a peaceful yet festive atmosphere. The name “Chagu Chagu” comes from the rhythmic jingling sound of the bells attached to the horses, which echoes through the fresh early summer air, adding to the charm of this heartwarming tradition.

Chūson-ji Konjikidō
