Chichibu Night Festival

The Chichibu Night Festival is the grand annual festival of Chichibu Shrine in Saitama Prefecture, held every year on December 2nd and 3rd. It is recognized as one of Japan’s Three Great Float Festivals, alongside Kyoto’s Gion Festival and Takayama’s Takayama Festival.

The highlight of the event takes place on the night of December 3rd, when six magnificent festival floats, including luxuriously decorated yatai (festival floats) and kasaboko (ornate floats with large umbrellas), are paraded through the streets. These floats, adorned with intricate carvings and gold leaf, are hauled up steep slopes to the rhythm of traditional festival music—a breathtaking sight to behold.

Adding to the magic, around 7,000 fireworks light up the crisp winter night sky, creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The festival is so culturally significant that it has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the Japanese government and is also recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

If you’re visiting Japan in December, the Chichibu Night Festival is a must-see experience, offering a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship, music, and spectacular fireworks.
