Kagawa Prefecture, located in the northern part of Shikoku, is also known as the “Udon Prefecture.”

As the birthplace of Sanuki udon, you can enjoy the authentic, chewy udon noodles at many local restaurants. One of the best ways to experience the local culture is by going on an udon tour. By savoring the delicious, warm udon in flavorful broth, you’ll be able to connect with Kagawa’s rich traditions.

Setouchi Triennale

The Setouchi Triennale is a major contemporary art festival held once every three years across the islands of Japan’s scenic Seto Inland Sea. First launched in 2010, the festival is spread across three seasons—spring, summer, and autumn, and runs for about 100 days in total.

Art installations and exhibitions by both Japanese and international artists are showcased in 17 areas, including well-known art islands like Naoshima, Teshima, Megijima, Ogijima, and Shodoshima. The festival transforms these islands into open-air galleries, blending art with the region’s rich culture and natural beauty.

Ritsurin Garden

Ritsurin Garden, located in Takamatsu City, is a renowned Japanese landscape garden designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Construction began in 1642 and continued for over a century, resulting in a traditional strolling pond garden featuring six ponds and thirteen artificial hills, all set against the backdrop of Mount Shiun. The garden is adorned with approximately 1,400 pine trees and a variety of seasonal flowers, offering a different scenic view with each step—a concept known as “ippō isshō” (one step, one scene). Visitors can also enjoy leisurely boat rides on the ponds and take breaks at the traditional teahouses within the garden.

Naoshima

Naoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea that has become a popular destination where contemporary art and nature come together. You can find a variety of art pieces scattered across the island, such as the Tadao Ando-designed Chichu Art Museum, the Lee Ufan Museum, and Yayoi Kusama’s famous red pumpkin sculpture. There are also unique attractions like the “House Project,” where old traditional houses are turned into art spaces, and the “Naoshima Bath I♥YU,” an art-themed public bathhouse where you can actually take a dip. The entire island is surrounded by art, making it a beloved spot for both domestic and international visitors.

Kotohira Shrine (Konpira Shrine)

Konpira Shrine (Kotikora-gu) is a famous shrine located on the slopes of Mount Zōtō in Kotohira Town, often affectionately called “Konpira-san” by locals. It is a popular place of worship dedicated to the sea gods. The approach to the main shrine consists of 785 stone steps, and there are 1,368 steps leading to the inner sanctuary. Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Sanuki Plain. Along the path, you’ll find a variety of souvenir shops and restaurants that add to the enjoyment of visitors.

Chichibugahama Beach

Chichibugahama Beach, located in Mitoyo City, is a stunning 1-kilometer-long stretch of beach known for its calm, shallow waters, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing swim. At low tide during sunset, the surface of the water becomes like a mirror, reflecting the sky and even the people around—creating a magical, surreal scene. This breathtaking view quickly gained attention on social media and earned the nickname “Japan’s Uyuni Salt Flats.” It’s an absolute must-see photo spot!

Shodoshima – Angel Road

Angel Road is a 500-meter-long sand path that only appears during low tide on Shodoshima Island. It’s said that if you walk across it with someone special, your wish will come true. The nearby “Promised Hill Observatory” on Benten Island offers a romantic spot where you can ring the “Bell of Happiness.”

Takamatsu Port

Takamatsu Port is a harbor in Takamatsu City where ferries depart for destinations like Shodoshima Island and Naoshima. It’s also the gateway to the Setouchi Triennale, an international art festival. The area around the port features landmarks like the Takamatsu Symbol Tower and the glass lighthouse ‘Setoshirube,’ making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Yashima

Yashima was formed about 14 million years ago when lava erupted from volcanic activity and spread horizontally. Over time, erosion shaped the land into its current form. While it’s famous as the site of the historic Battle of Dan-no-ura, it’s also popular for attractions like the New Yashima Aquarium and the observation facility ‘Yashimaru.’

Marugame Castle

Marugame Castle is located in Marugame City and is a flatland castle with a wooden keep, which is one of Japan’s 12 remaining original castles. Its highlight is the stone walls, known as the ‘Fan-shaped Slope,’ which are the tallest in Japan. The castle is also famous for its impressive stonework and is referred to as a ‘Castle of Notable Stone Walls.’ With over 400 years of history since its construction, it has been designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government.

Shodoshima

Shodoshima is a beautiful island in the Seto Inland Sea, known for its rich nature, olive cultivation, and soy sauce production. The island is home to many scenic spots, such as “Angel Road” and “Kankakei,” one of Japan’s top three most beautiful valleys. It’s also a popular location for films and anime. You can visit places like the “24 Eyes Movie Village,” a recreated set from the movie Twenty-Four Eyes, and the Olive Park, which was featured in the live-action version of Kiki’s Delivery Service.

Kotohira Town – Kanamaruza Theater

Kanamaruza is the oldest existing theater in Japan, built in 1835, and it’s designated as an Important Cultural Property. Every April, it hosts the ‘Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Performance.’ The town of Kotohira flourished as the gateway to Konpira Shrine, and you can find many historical buildings scattered around. You can also enjoy Sanuki udon and hot springs here.
