Tax-Free Shopping in 3 Steps
Almost every Don Quijote store offers tax-free shopping (exemption of the consumption-tax amount) for international visitors. The procedure takes just three steps, and purchases of ¥5,500 or more qualify.
STEP 1 ─ Bring your passport
Tax-free shopping requires your original passport ─ copies and smartphone photos are not accepted. It is available to short-term visitors (staying 90 days or less).
STEP 2 ─ Spend ¥5,500 or more and pay at the register
General goods (electronics, clothing, accessories) and consumables (food, cosmetics, medicine) qualify from a combined total of ¥5,500. Pay at any regular register. Consumables will be sealed in a dedicated bag.
STEP 3 ─ Complete the paperwork at the tax-free counter
Take your receipt, purchases and passport to the in-store Tax-Free Counter. Sign the form and the consumption-tax amount (10% or 8%) is refunded. Do not open the sealed bag of consumables until you leave Japan ─ customs may ask to see it at the airport.

Q. Can I pay by credit card?
A. Most stores accept VISA / Mastercard / JCB / American Express / UnionPay and major e-payments (PayPay, Alipay, WeChat Pay and more).
Q. Are there ATMs?
A. Many stores have Seven Bank ATMs where you can withdraw Japanese yen with cards issued overseas (VISA / Mastercard / JCB / UnionPay and others).
Q. Can I exchange foreign currency?
A. Major stores have currency-exchange machines that convert US dollars, Chinese yuan, Korean won and other major currencies into Japanese yen.
Q. Is delivery available?
A. Some stores deliver to hotels and airports. Overseas shipping varies by store, so please check with the staff before purchasing.
Q. Are free samples available?
A. Tasting events are held in some food sections. Good manners: join only when invited by the staff.
Q. Is there an official app?
A. There is a point app called “majica” (a Japanese phone number is required). For short stays, ask the staff about in-store coupons instead.
Shopping Etiquette at Donki
- Some areas of the store are no-photography zones. To be safe, check with the staff before taking pictures.
- The busiest hours are 6 pm to 10 pm. For a relaxed shopping trip, mornings are best.
- Buying lots of heavy items? The delivery service is convenient ─ you can ship to your hotel or the airport.
- Keep the ¥5,500 tax-free threshold in mind as you shop and you will get the tax amount refunded.
